THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS – DAY 12: LOST GIRLS

On the twelth day of Christmas, 3 Loop gave to me…..

…. A CHANCE TO WIN A TEST PRESSING FROM LOST GIRLS!

One of our most intriguing releases was a startingly good album that had sat unreleased in the vaults since 1998.

Lost Girls are Patrick Fitzgerald of Kitchens of Distinction and Heidi Berry who had released several albums on Creation and 4AD. Looking for a project, they got together in the studio and put together a remarkable set of songs which, when we got to hear them, we knew were too good to sit on that shelf for any longer. Our 2CD, LP and Download of the album has met with critical acclaim (scroll down to see!) and we have a competition for you to win a unique prize – a test pressing vinyl of the album.

For you chance to win it, head over to over to our Facebook page here, like our page and share the Lost Girls post.

You can also enter on Twitter by following us here and retweeting the Lost Girls tweet.

We’ll pick a winner from all you sharers and tweeters…

Good luck!

“(Lost Girls is) somewhere between the 4AD ‘Sound’ and that of Kitchens of Distinction. The Lost Girls could have been just that, lost. On the evidence of this collection of their work, that would have been criminal.”
8.7/10 – Backseat Mafia

“an embarrassment of previously unreleased riches”
★★★★ – Record Collector

“Wild abandonment on collaboration between Patrick Fitzgerald, Heidi Berry and others”
★★★★ – Daily Mirror

“A stunning collection of songs”

THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS – DAY 11: BOB

On the eleventh day of Christmas, 3 Loop gave to me…..

…. AN EXCLUSIVE BOB VIDEO!

As BOB prepare themselves for a return to live action next year, we want to share this with you – a clip from an intimate show at Southsea’s Pie And Vinyl shop around the promotion of the re-issue of Leave The Straight Life Behind.

This track is a cover of a Jesse James track that Simon came across on a Northern Soul compilation and we think it’s a belter!

BOB have announced that they are playing at the Gigantic Indie All Dayer on 23rd May in Manchester and are planning some other dates too, so watch this space.
All this and a new Anthology release in pipeline means 2015 is going to be a busy year for BOB!

Praise for J’Accuse!
“If you can’t find anything to enjoy on J’Accuse, you’re not listening carefully enough”
Backseat Mafia – 8/10

“An album that has left the past behind, and expanded its horizons. Indie is not the world.
You might not know and might not care that these songs share a creator with former indie chart hits like “River of Diamonds” and “Steamroller”, it’s great to hear old voices doing new things, and doing them this well, with a freshness and intelligence.”
Record Rewind Play – 8.5/10

“J’Accuse! is turning out to be something rather special”
Andrew Collins

“a rare beast; an album that bears repeated listening, that doesn’t treat you like an eight year old, that demands you come and meet it half-way. J’Accuse! is intelligent pop music with suss which maintains that there is still something of worth to be done with that form of expression… why is no-one else doing this?”
Louder Than War

“erudite, eclectic and enormously enjoyable… one of those all-too-rare quietly triumphant records; confident, fun, adult, fully formed and self contained.”
The Mouth Magazine

“there’s no doubting J’Accuse! is a mighty accomplished piece of work”
Isolation Records

THE AUTEURS: THE RE-ISSUES

Originally released in 1993 after The Auteurs had issued a demo cassette, landed a tour supporting Suede and had record companies fighting to sign them, New Wave was the vanguard of the emerging, post-Nirvana British music scene. It was justly nominated for a Mercury Music Prize though the gong was taken by Suede.

Mr Luke Haines says “Some 21 years later and the album still sounds great. There is not a note that I would change.”

The album features the singles Showgirl and How Could I Be Wrong and now includes key b-sides, live and session recordings and previously unreleased demos, taken from the actual cassette that got them signed to Hut Records.

Now I’m A Cowboy was released in 1994 and is home the smash hit Lenny Valentino. In reflection, Mr Luke Haines remembers: “After we had finished recording ‘New Wave,’ I was determined not to get caught out by ‘difficult second album syndrome’, so I kept writing. New French Girlfriend, Lenny Valentino, Government Bookstore and Modern History were all written at the end of 1993. There was a truck load of ‘English’ stupid on the horizon. Against conformity, I rashly called the album Now I’m A Cowboy which was exactly how I felt, and the opposite of everything that was about to come.”

Recorded in under two weeks at Abbey Road Studios, After Murder Park marked a new direction and needed a new sound provided by the production of Steve Albini. Mr Luke Haines considers the recording sessions the high point of The Auteurs career: “My only regret is I didn’t know just how good this stuff was at the time. Sure, I knew we were on to something. But really, ‘After Murder Park’ …fucking Woah!”

The Auteurs fourth and ultimately final album, How I Learned To Love The Bootboys was released in July 1999, a 3-year gap since After Murder Park. During that hiatus, Mr Luke Haines released albums as part of Black Box Recorder and under the guise of Baader Meinhof.

Mr Luke Haines says “On listening to …Bootboys again, I’m actually surprised how focussed it sounds. There’s a straightforward ‘pop side’ and an unstraightforward ‘experimental’ side. My only regret is not putting more on the album – really stretching it out and making it a sprawling double, songs like Breaking Up and Get Wrecked At Home were far too good for B-sides”.

In 1995, Mr Luke Haines found himself with time on his hands after completing The Auteurs third album, After Murder Park.  so he headed back into the studio and recorded Baader Meinhof, an album art project recounting the story of the Baader Meinhof group, a bunch of 1970s West German urban revolutionaries.

Armed with an array of synths, a head full of funk and a super-top classical Indian percussionist, the result is dance music for the brain, movies for the ear.  Just imagine George Clinton producing a malevolent KC and the Sunshine Band all jacked up on militant Last Poets bongo rhyme.

Mr Haines says Whack up the low end and dig with open mind and ears. All recorded on tape and executed with intent. Headphones on. Volume way up”.

THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS – DAY 3: FIVE THIRTY

On the third day of Christmas, 3 Loop gave to me…..

…. AN EXCLUSIVE FIVE THIRTY PLAYLIST AND WIN THE PERFECT STOCKING FILLER!

Lee Rourke, curator of the Five Thirty website has put together a playlist of the tracks that influenced Five Thirty together with some tracks from their contemporaries in the early 90s. Here’s Lee to explain the choices.

Ray Charles- What I’d Say In 1987/88 Five Thirty were doing mainly covers with a few of their own self penned tracks thrown in. This Ray Charles classic was just one of many in their repertoire.

John Lee Hooker – Serves Me Right to Suffer The blues genre was an obvious influence on the early Five Thirty incarnation and again included in their own set list.

The Small Faces – Autumn Stone What great band has not been influenced by The Small Faces? One of their most beautiful tunes for me.

The Moment – Sticks and Stones The Moment were one of the leading Mod revival bands of the 80’s who certainly influenced the Tara and Paul as they started Five Thirty in earnest in the mid 80s.

Jimi Hendrix – Hear My Train a Comin’ This trio of bass, guitar and drums certainly had an effect on Five Thirty’s and a number of Hendrix’s songs were in their cover bank. Hear My Train a Comin’ was one of the songs they used to cover around 1987.

The Who – Baba O Riley A band of great musicians, a boat load of tunes and a part of Mod history- what’s not to like (besides Rogers perm). The Who were often cited in Five Thirty gig reviews due to the energy, power and sweat the lads put into their gigs just like The Who did before them.

The Beatles – Day in the Life It’s a great song and legend has it that part of this song was sampled in Five Thirty’s only album Bed.

The Jam – Start There was a time when every journalist mentioned The Jam and Five Thirty in the same breath. Definitely an influence on Five Thirty – tight drumming, funky bass and cool guitars – see a link there?

Manic Street Preachers- Motown Junk A bit of a love hate relationship existed between the bands but worthy contemporaries nevertheless. Both bands appeared on the BBC live at the Marquee and managed to turn the air blue.

Ride – Taste Both bands were getting positive press attention at the same time in 1990, however being part of the “shoegazing” scene certainly helped Ride raise their profile. Personally, Ride were good enough not to be linked with any scene and this track in my case in point.

The Honey Smugglers – Listen Lesser known band The Honey Smugglers gigged quite a few times with Five Thirty. Shame they did not get the credit they deserved. Sounds familiar eh?

The Stone Roses – Fools Gold You might have heard of these. I think Five Thirty must have felt they had been robbed a bit when they heard this. Snaky bass and groovy drums accompanying funkadelic wah-wah guitars. Classic in all senses of the word.

Flowered Up – Weekender Another of Five Thirty’s contemporaries, Flowered Up gigged several times with them. They really raised their game when they released this song and epic video.

Five Thirty – Supernova I could have chosen dozens of Five Thirty’s songs, but I really like this video as it captures the lads so well (love the sheep too).

Orange Deluxe – Anti- Gravity Blues When Five Thirty split, Paul Bassett moved on with Orange Deluxe. This live version captures the band so well.

The Nubiles – Layabout Tara made new friends and formed The Nubiles when Five Thirty called it a day. Great schizophrenic track that has so many faces to it.

About the Bed re-issue….
Classic Pop – 5/5 “One of the great lost bands of the 90s”
Q magazine – 4/5 – “Five Thirty could have prospered during Britpop – in 1991 though their snotty-nosed swagger chafed against shoegazing’s introspection. Had they been released (in 1994) they’d be familiar as chips today”
